The Korean Cuisine Garden assortment features 7 of the most popular fruit and vegetable seeds grown for traditional Korean kitchens. Our specialty Korean seeds assortment features shiso seeds, cabbage seeds, sesame seeds, Chinese mustard seeds, Korean radish seeds, and two varieties of Korean pepper seeds.
While the Korean peninsula is home to humid, wet, and hot summers, its winters can be especially cold and dry, ideal for each of the varieties in the Korean Cuisine Garden assortment.
Perennial herbs such as Korean perilla, Chinese mustard, Korean radish, and Chinese cabbage can be grown as warm-season annuals or can be overwintered outdoors for perennial harvesting.
The Korean Cuisine Garden features traditional Korean red peppers for making red chili paste (gochujang) and a Korean cabbage used for making kimchi. Korean perilla and sesame are commonly used in Korean cooking. Jeok Gat is a spicy mustard and Alpine Gold is a crisp Korean radish for pickling.
Perilla frutescens
Korean Perilla, also known as shiso or deulkkae, is a perennial member of the mint family Lamiaceae similar in size, flavor, and tolerance to peppermint. However, unlike culinary mint, Korean perilla leaves grow much larger and are traditionally used for wraps as well as pickling. While many shiso varieties have adapted to cooler climates, Korean perilla still prefers warm, humid gardens similar to those of the Korean peninsula.
Capsicum annuum
Korean Put Gochu, also known as Vita Green Hybrid, is a mild hot pepper traditionally used in the dried Korean chili powder Gochugaru. Don't let the name "hot pepper" fool you, because the Korean Put Gochu pepper only averages a tame 1,500 SHU. Korean peppers are about 6" long and share a unique oblong look similar to two other mild peppers, the Anaheim and the Jalapeno. Ideal for container gardening and patios.
Capsicum annuum
Gochujang King Hybrid Pepper is another variety of gochugaru seeds, hot Korean pepper seeds grown nearly exclusively for gochugaru chili powder; used to create Gochujang sauce. Also known as Korean long pepper, the Gochujang King hybrid has a rating of 1,500 SHU and is far milder than jalapeno (2,500-8000 SHU). Commonly sown with other gochugaru pepper seeds for well-rounded gochugaru chili powder.
Brassica pekinensis
Chun Yeon Gold Hybrid Chinese Cabbage boasts 12" tall and 7-8" wide, tightly packed heads of napa cabbage and known to thrive under a number of garden conditions. Napa cabbage seeds such as Chun Yeon Gold Hybrid is popularly grown for traditional kimchi recipes for excellent flavor, minimal water content, and much thinner, more tender, white ribs when compared to other varieites of authentic Chinese cabbage.
Sesamum indicum
Kingoma Sesame is native to the Asian and sub-Saharan tropics such as India, Myanmar, and Sudan, where it thrives hot, humid, and well-drainded growing spaces. To buy sesame seeds online can be tricky because you never know color or type, but Kingoma sesame seeds are creamy tan white for a wide variety of culinary uses. Kingoma sesame seeds require about 100-135 days to begin producing seeded pods for harvesting.
Brassica juncea
Jeok Gat Mustard is a cultivar of Chinese mustard grown throughout Korea and northern China. Also widely known as Oriental mustard or Indian mustard, Jeok Gat is a preferred variety of Korean mustard for its tender, spicy, and purple ruffled leaves. Altough native to the warm Asian tropics, Brassica juncea is one of the most tenacious herbs available and is grown over winter in the United States as a beneficial cover crop.
Raphanus sativus
Alpine Gold Hybrid Radish is a late-season cultivar of radish seeds traditionally grown throughout the winter and harvested in spring. More commonly known as Daikon radish or Japanese radish, white radish seeds such Alpine Gold Hybrid produce enormous 9-11" long roots as opposed to shallow 2" roots of common spring radish. Create authentic Danmuji or Chicken Mu by growing and harvesting your own Korean radish seeds.
