85 days to maturity. Sesame indicum. Tan Kingoma Sesame Seeds. Warm season annual. Kingoma sesame seeds are a great balance between the mild flavor of white sesame seeds and the stronger flavor of black ones. If that’s what you’re looking for, give these seeds a shot! Kingoma seeds are even in the middle when it comes to tan color. They are a tropical plant so they require a long, warm season for best results. Pick up some of these seeds to grow fresh, nutty sesame seeds for your favorite dishes! About 13000 seeds per ounce.
Once your soil temperatures are sufficiently high (70+ degrees Fahrenheit), sow seeds in soil that’s fertile and drains well. Alternatively, start indoors six weeks beforehand and transplant outside at this point. Give fertilizer as needed and water consistently. Once pods begin to dry out, begin to harvest starting with the lowest branches.
Harvesting Kingoma Sesame Seeds
Sesame seeds can be harvested in several ways. The pods will begin to dry and turn brown, starting with the lowest branches. Cut the branches as the pods on them begin to split open and let the pods finish splitting indoors. After they open, shake them out over a bag, tarp, or bucket to collect the seeds. At this point, they can be eaten fresh, roasted, or dried.
If your growing season is short and you’re concerned about losing your harvest, collect the pods while they’re still green and store them inside in a paper bag. They will eventually ripen and dry, and you can follow the steps above.
Sesame seeds are used to give flavor to many Asian dishes. Kingoma seeds are a great choice for garnishes or as an added crunch for salads, but they can also be used in cooking. Try adding to a stir-fry for some nutty crunch. One unique use for sesame seeds is tahini! It’s a paste made from sesame seeds and used like hummus. Tahini is easy to make at home and a great dip.
Sesame has been bred to resist most pests and diseases, so you shouldn’t have many struggles outside of common, general problems. Use normal preventive measures for things like aphids or fungal diseases. If your sesame plants develop an issues, contact your local extension office for treatment options.
