Growing Pony Tails Stipa Garden Seeds

Pony Tails stipa seeds are a sun-hardy grow and most commonly sown directly outside just after the frost. For earliest blooming, begin indoors 4-6 weeks prior and seeds should germinate in 14-21 days with full lighting. Stipa is perfect for planters and is just as popularly grown indoors as it is outdoors. Plant 5-6 Pony Tails stipa seeds in dry, sandy, and well-drained soil in full sun. Once established, Pony Tails stipa performs well in gardens prone to drought, heat, and poor and sandy soils. Nassella tenuissima is not susceptible to any pests or diseases. Pony Tails stipa seeds mature in 98-105 days as 24-36" tall grassy uprights with a 24" spread of soft and lightly feathered ornamental grass.

Nassella tenuissima, or otherwise known as Pony Tails, is native to many hot and arid regions in North and South America. Despite its prevalence throughout those two continents, it is considered an incredibly invasive species in Australia and would cause an ecological disaster if introduced to the country. Even seeds and cuttings of the plant are entirely forbidden and there was an incident in 2009 where the seeds made it into the country because Nassella tenuissima was accidentally mislabeled as Stipa lessingiana.

The genus Stipa underwent a taxonomical restructuring and Pony Tails is more correctly known as Nassella.
