Growing Cauliflower Seeds - Heirloom Rainbow Blend in the Vegetable Garden
For a head start, sow seeds indoors 4 to 6 weeks before your last spring frost, then transplant seedlings out 2 to 3 weeks before that date. Cauliflower can also be direct sown, spaced 18 to 24 inches apart in rows 24 to 36 inches apart, seeded 0.25 inch deep. For a reliable fall crop, sow in mid to late summer so heads mature in cool weather.
Keep soil consistently moist and fertilize regularly, since cauliflower is a heavier feeder than many other cool-season crops. Purple and green varieties in this blend do not require blanching, but any white-headed plants will develop the whitest curds if their outer leaves are tied or folded over the head once it begins to form.
Harvesting Heirloom Rainbow Blend Cauliflower
Harvest heads once they reach full size but before the curds begin to separate or loosen, cutting the head away from the main stem with a sharp knife. Check plants regularly once heads begin forming, since cauliflower can go from ready to overmature within just a few days in warm weather.
About Heirloom Rainbow Blend Cauliflower Garden Seeds
This blend brings together open-pollinated cauliflower varieties selected for their range of natural head colors, from classic white to vivid purple and green.
Because it's open-pollinated, gardeners who want to save their own seed can do so, keeping the tradition of these colorful strains going year after year.
Growing a mix like this in one row or bed is an easy way to add variety to the harvest table without dedicating space to several separate varieties.
Tips From Our Gardeners
Plant a full row of this blend and let the colors be a surprise — we like tucking a few plants throughout the fall garden bed so each harvest basket ends up looking like a little rainbow of its own.
