What is "Below Standard Seed"?
Simply put, it is seed that doesn't meet our state's (Utah) germination standard, a standard that varies slightly from seed to seed. Any seed intended for gardening with a below-standard germination rate cannot be sold alongside seed that meets state requirements (which often reflect national germination requirements).
We send samples of all our seed to the Utah Department of Agriculture, where they perform several tests to assess the quality of the seed. These state-wide and national seed standards are in line with Association of Official Seed Analysts (AOSA), which exist to ensure consumers that they are getting the highest quality seed, as advertised. Since this seed doesn't meet the state standard, we mark it as "Below Standard Seed".
Low germination seeds are non-refundable.

Growing Non-GMO Red Beauty Zinnia Flower Seeds
Zinnias can be started 4 weeks indoors before the last frost for the earliest blooms. Otherwise, sow them directly in the garden bed or field after the last frost. Cover the seeds lightly and water with a mister. Keep in mind that seeds germinate best at 70-80 F. Zinnias do very well in low water conditions, but may require a bit of extra water to help them get started. However, be sure the soil and seedlings dry out between irrigations; zinnias do poorly in overly wet conditions and thrive in dry weather.
Red Beauty Zinnias bloom all summer long and will expire at the first hard frost. They are very persistent and may produce new blooms into November in some areas. Expect them to reseed; however, the seeds may not survive all winters. If you wish to prevent reseeding, cut the flower heads after they bloom and remove the entire plant before the seeds begin to develop. In zones above 8, seeds can also be sown in the fall. Follow all the above instructions as normal for gorgeous winter blooms.
Red Beauty Zinnia in the Flower Garden
Incorporate these into wildflower and cut flower gardens, or use them as a monochromatic mass planting. They also make a bright border for driveways or sidewalks. Zinnias will liven up any outdoor space with these exotic blooms.
Harvesting Red Beauty Zinnia
Zinnias are popularly used as cut flowers. Trim off the flower stalk at the base with clean scissors or a knife when the zinnias are in full bloom. Quickly transfer to clean, cool water to enjoy for 1-2 weeks inside!
The flowers of the zinnias are also edible! Pluck the petals when the flowers are blooming and use them as a garnish on cakes, salads, or other cold foods. They are said to have a mild, gentle bitterness.
About Red Beauty Zinnia Garden Seeds
Zinnias are safe for human consumption but may be toxic when ingested by animals such as livestock or dogs. Contact your veterinarian if you have questions or worry that your pet may have ingested some.
The Zinnia flower is said to be originally from the southwestern USA, Mexico, and Central America.
These delightful blossoms are usually 4-5 inches wide and stand alone on a flower stalk reaching 3 feet high.
Zinnias are known to be hardy in a variety of conditions. This makes them perfect for planting along driveways and sidewalks. They can take the abuse!
Red Beauty Zinnias are attractive to pollinators. Bees have even been seen competing for first dibs on these beautiful, pollen-filled flowers. Plant some near your vegetable garden to encourage a pollen exchange!
Zinnias are deer-resistant, making them perfect for yards frequently visited by four-legged herbivores!
Stories From Our Gardeners
"Zinnias are easy to grow! I live in Michigan, and we have unpredictable weather in the autumn. The zinnias in my yard continue to have gorgeous blooms into late October most years. If there's not a hard frost, these bloomers will do what they do best!"
