Growing Non-GMO Red Beauty Zinnia Flower Seeds

Zinnias can be started indoors 4 weeks before the last frost for the earliest blooms. Otherwise, sow them directly in the garden bed or field after the last frost. Cover the seeds lightly and water with a mister. Keep in mind that seeds germinate best at 70-80 F. Zinnias do very well in low water conditions, but may require a bit of extra water to help them get started. However, be sure the soil and seedlings dry out between irrigations; zinnias do poorly in overly wet conditions and thrive in dry weather.

Red Beauty Zinnias bloom all summer long and will expire at the first hard frost. They are very persistent and may produce new blooms into November in some areas. Expect them to reseed; however, the seeds may not survive all winters. If you wish to prevent reseeding, cut the flower heads after blooming and remove the entire plant before the seeds start to develop. In zones above 8, seeds can also be sown in the fall. Follow all the above instructions as normal for gorgeous winter blooms.

The flowers of the zinnias are also edible! Pluck the petals when the flowers are blooming and use as a garnish on cakes, salads, or other cold foods. They are said to have a mild but gentle bitter taste.
