Growing Golden Yarrow in the Garden
Golden Yarrow is a durable, sun-loving perennial. For transplants, start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before your last frost. Press seeds onto the surface of moist seed-starting mix and do not cover, as light aids germination. Maintain 65-75 F and keep the surface evenly moist until seedlings emerge in 7-21 days. Provide bright light to prevent stretching.
Harden off seedlings and transplant to the garden after danger of frost has passed, spacing plants 12-18 inches apart in rows 18-24 inches. Choose a sunny site with well-drained soil—Golden Yarrow tolerates lean, dry conditions but dislikes soggy ground. For direct sowing, surface-sow or lightly press seeds into prepared soil after frost, or sow in fall in mild climates so seeds can germinate with spring moisture.
Harvesting of Golden Yarrow
Golden Yarrow generally comes into full bloom in its second year from seed. Cut stems when flower clusters are fully colored and just opening, before they begin to fade. Use a clean, sharp tool and harvest in the cool of the morning for the longest vase life.
For dried arrangements, cut stems at peak color, strip lower leaves, and hang small bunches upside down in a warm, dark, well-ventilated place until completely dry. Well-dried heads hold their golden hue and stiff form for months in wreaths and arrangements.
About Golden Yarrow Garden Seeds
Also known as fernleaf yarrow, noble yarrow, gold yarrow, milfoil, and nosebleed. Cloth of Gold, Achillea filipendulina is a classic border and meadow perennial, valued for its fern-like foliage and broad, flat flower heads that stand up to heat, drought, and lean soils. Plants form upright clumps that naturalize gently in favorable conditions.
Golden Yarrow’s canary-yellow umbels bring bright, long-lasting color to beds, borders, and pollinator plantings from early summer into fall. The flowers are prized for fresh bouquets and as one of the most dependable dried flowers, while yarrow’s traditional herbal use as a skin-soothing and protective plant is well known in folk gardens.
Tips From Our Gardeners
"Give Golden Yarrow full sun and well-drained soil—it thrives where many flowers struggle. Surface-sow the tiny seeds, keep them just moist, and cut stems at peak color for fresh or dried arrangements that last and last."
