Growing Gum Drop Brown Hybrid Tomatoes in the Vegetable Garden
To start planting your Gum Drop Brown Hybrid Tomatoes, start by planting the seeds in trays indoors 6-8 weeks before your region’s last spring frost date. Plant the seeds about 0.25 inches deep in well-draining soil. Make sure the seeds are in a warm location with a temperature somewhere between 65-85 degrees F in order for them to germinate, which will happen between 7-10 days. After the seedlings have true leaves and have grown about 6-8 inches tall, you can transplant them outdoors! Plant them in a sunny location in your garden, raised bed, or greenhouse where they will have full sun exposure. Plant the seedlings somewhere between 18 and 36 inches apart so they have plenty of room to grow and can get enough air circulation. Because it is an indeterminate variety, Gum Drop Brown Hybrid Tomatoes will continue to grow throughout the growing season, so it’s important to make sure you provide them with support for their fruit, like stakes or trellises. Make sure to check for pests and diseases and take action to remedy them immediately. Also make sure to keep the soil moist and maintain a consistent watering schedule for your tomatoes, especially in hotter or drier periods of the season.
It’s important to take good care of your tomatoes throughout the growing season to ensure that you will have a bountiful harvest! Make sure to provide your plants with plenty of water - aim for at least an inch per week, whether through rainfall or watering. When watering, make sure the soil isn’t waterlogged, as this could lead to diseases like root rot. You can apply mulch to the base of your plants to help keep the moisture in the soil and suppress weeds. Make sure to put stakes and trellises in your garden to support the tomatoes as they grow and produce fruit. You should also prune your plants occasionally and remove suckers to promote better airflow and encourage the plants to produce fruit. Try companion planting in your garden - plants like herbs and marigolds can add color to the garden and help provide your plants with nutrients & deter pests.
Harvesting Gum Drop Brown Hybrid Tomatoes
As your tomatoes ripen, their color will change into a red or brown color & develop stripes. Your tomatoes are ready to harvest when they are about the size of a marble and they are plump and slightly soft to the touch. Because these tomatoes are indeterminate, they will produce fruit throughout the growing season, so make sure to keep an eye on your plants and harvest any fruit that is ripe before it becomes overripe. To harvest the tomatoes, just pluck them from the vine, and try to avoid damaging the vine. To harvest multiple tomatoes, you can use shears to cut the vine above the fruit. These tomatoes are normally ripe within about 75 days of transplanting.
About Gum Drop Brown Hybrid Tomato Garden Seeds
These hybrid tomatoes were probably bred for their smoky taste and unique striped coloring. They produce fruit relatively quickly - between 70 and 80 days - which is also a unique trait that they may have been bred for.
These tomatoes contain vitamins C and A, potassium, lycopene, beta-carotene, phenolic acids, and flavonoids. They’re a superfood with high micronutrient density (ANDI score in the top 20)!
Because they’re indeterminate, these tomatoes need a bit more space to grow, which means they may not be the best fit for smaller spaces like hanging baskets. They are a great fit for raised beds, gardens, and greenhouses where they can grow to their full height and have room to spread!
Tips From Our Gardeners
"Tomatoes can benefit from more phosphorus and potassium than other plants, so consider buying fertilizer rich in these nutrients when you are fertilizing your plants!"
