Growing Non-GMO Sweet Pea Royal Family Mixture Flower Seeds
Soaking the seeds overnight in water will boost germination rates, although this is not required. For direct outdoor sowing, choose a sunny spot with organic material worked into the soil as soon as frost has passed. For the hardiest sweet pea plants, sow Royal Family Mix seeds at the bottom of a 6-inch trench. Soak sweet pea Royal Family Mix seeds for 24 hours prior to planting; germination will take about 12 days. Once plants are established, fill in the trench gradually until ground is level. In mild climates, plant in September through November. For severe climates, sow Royal Family Mix seeds in spring indoors 4-5 weeks before final frost, then transplant either indoors or out.
A trellis or similar structure can be inserted nearby to give height, air circulation, and definition during growth. It may climb up it on its own, or it may need a bit of help to train it upwards. To extend blooming, add mulch to sweet peas to keep roots cool, and deadhead wilted blooms and foliage. While this variety can handle heat better than other varieties, it still prefers a nice cool summer.
Sweet Pea Royal Family Mixture in the Flower Garden
This Royal Family Mixture of Sweet Peas is a big attractor for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Use this lovable plant as an easy and fragrant vine to decorate your flower garden with.
Landscape Use of Sweet Pea Royal Family Mixture
They make an excellent choice for hanging baskets, pots, and garden borders. With a trellis, these can be a centerpiece to a smaller bed. Or, allow these to sprawl and plant them close together for a unique take on a flowering ground cover.
About Sweet Pea Royal Family Mixture Garden Seeds
We do not recommend consuming any part of this plant. This variety is not in the same genus as edible peas (Pisum sativum).
These sweet peas can also be used as short-lived cut flowers for short-stemmed arrangements. They add bright colors and a terrific aroma to any bouquet or centerpiece.
Expect bright blooms about 1-2 inches wide and tall.
Sweet peas generally originated from the Mediterranean, specifically Sicily, southern Italy, and the Aegean Islands.
Note: Sweet peas require temperatures below 60 F to initiate blooming. Once they have bloomed, they have higher temperature tolerance.
Although it is not necessary for most growing zones, starting these indoors will ensure the earliest spring blooms. After just 2-3 weeks, transplant them outside after hardening off.
