For the hardiest sweet pea plants, sow Royal Family Mix seeds at the bottom of a 6-inch trench. Soak sweet pea Royal Family Mix seeds for 24 hours prior to planting; germination will take about 12 days. Once plants are established, fill in the trench gradually until ground is level. Sweet peas generally originated from the Mediterranean, specifically Sicily, southern Italy, and the Aegean Islands.

Note: Sweet peas require temperatures below 60 F to initiate blooming. Once they have bloomed, they have higher temperature tolerance.

Although it is not necessary for most growing zones, starting these indoors will ensure the earliest spring blooms. After just 2-3 weeks, transplant them outside after hardening off.
