Except for the deep south or other parts of the United States with long growing seasons, Sweet Chelsea tomato seeds are started indoors 4 to 6 weeks prior to the last frost date. After last danger of frost, the seedlings are transplanted two-thirds of the way into the soil. The transplants require trellising or caging, as the vines can grow 5 to 6 feet tall. About 15 fruits grow on each strand, with around 10 vines on the plant.
They are the perfect size to add to a summer salad. These hybrid tomatoes can also be frozen or dehydrated.
Sweet Chelsea tomatoes are rich in vitamins, such as vitamins B, C, and K. It's thought that the vitamin B can reduce both high blood pressure and high cholesterol. These tomatoes also contain potassium and lycopene. Potassium is thought to balance muscle contractions, nerve signals, and fluids, as well as helping to prevent kidney stones and osteoporosis. Reduced blood pressure and chance of stroke are thought to be other possible benefits of a diet high in potassium. Lycopene, an antioxidant, may help reduce the risk of stomach and intestinal cancers, as well as prevent macular degeneration. Recent studies have focused on lycopene providing pain relief, similar to ibuprofen.
