Growing Non-GMO Starburst Sunflower Flower Seeds
Starburst F1 Hybrid sunflower seeds grow well in most areas. Directly sow these seeds as soon as the soil temperature exceeds 45 F. For earlier blooms, start the seeds inside 3-4 weeks before the soil is anticipated to warm up. Germinate and then grow the seedlings under a grow light. Transplant the seedlings outdoors after hardening off. Plant the seeds or seedlings in a prepared area, free of weeds and in full sun. The seeds should germinate in about two weeks and then begin growing so rapidly that you can almost see the progress.
These gorgeous single-stem annuals will die at the first hard frost but can self-seed to send a new generation the following year if the seeds are not collected or eaten; this is most common in areas with mild winters. There is no need to worry about letting volunteers take over, as these showy sunflowers aren’t invasive or harmful. Starburst sunflowers have adaptable water requirements and can handle variations in irrigation, except extremes. This variety will benefit from staking, especially at the end of the season and during rough weather.
Starburst Sunflower in the Flower Garden
Starburst sunflowers are incredible to plant among a wildflower mix or along a property or fence line. They are an excellent choice for involving kids or novice gardeners in their exciting and noticeable growth. They can be a focal point for their enchanting exhibit or scattered in any spare patch of soil due to their willingness to grow.
Harvesting Starburst Sunflower
These tall beauties can be cut flowers for seasonal bouquets of sunshine yellow. When they are in full bloom, snip off the stem 12-18 inches below the flower. Bundle a few together with a rubber band and hang them upside down in a well-ventilated area for dried sunflowers!
Starburst sunflowers also bear edible seeds. Follow these suggestions: First, be swift! The birds and small critters adore these seeds and will eat them as promptly as possible. Utilize a mesh sack with a drawstring like a seed collecting bag or nut milk bag and place it over the flowerhead (cinch the string to secure the opening) when the petals have faded. Over the next 4 weeks, the seeds will mature and naturally fall into the bag for easy collecting!
