Growing Zao Feng Hybrid in the Vegetable Garden
Sow seeds 1 inch deep in warm soil (60 F or higher) after the last frost. Space plants 24-36 inches apart, with rows 36-48 inches apart. Starting indoors 3-4 weeks prior to transplanting can extend the growing season.
Maintain consistent moisture, mulch to conserve water and suppress weeds, and monitor for pests regularly.
Harvesting Zao Feng Hybrid
Harvest squash when fruits are 6-8 inches long and firm, usually 50-60 days after planting. Use a sharp knife or scissors to cut fruit from the vine to avoid damage.

From Our Gardeners
Kabocha type winter squash is known for its hard, dark green rind, squat pumpkin-like shape, and vibrant yellow-orange flesh with a dense, dry texture and rich sweetness reminiscent of sweet potato and chestnut. This squash is highly versatile, commonly used in roasting, steaming, soups, tempura, and even baked goods and desserts due to its ability to absorb flavors and maintain its shape when cooked.
