Growing Sweet Keeper Winter Squash in the Vegetable Garden
Sow Sweet Keeper seeds 1 inch deep in warm soil after the last frost. Direct sowing is recommended, or start indoors 3-4 weeks before transplanting. Plant 2-3 seeds per mound, then thin to 1 plant. Space plants 8-12 feet apart with rows 8-12 feet apart to allow vines to spread freely.
Apply mulch to retain soil moisture and keep roots cool. Fertilize after the first blooms and again at the time of fruiting. Monitor for pests and provide trellising or vine training if needed.
Harvesting Sweet Keeper Winter Squash
Harvest when rinds are hard and stems solid, generally around 110 days from sowing. Cut fruit with 4 inches of stem attached. Cure in a warm, dry area for 10-14 days to extend storage life. Sweet Keeper stores exceptionally well and improves in sweetness after curing.

Tips From Our Gardeners
"Sweet Keeper winter squash is exactly what its name promises: a dependable, long-lasting, and wonderfully flavorful addition to any garden. The vines are moderately vigorous, spreading out across the soil but manageable enough for home gardens, making them ideal for gardeners who want abundant fruit without completely taking over the space. The squash themselves are striking, with smooth, golden-orange skin and dense, sweet flesh that’s perfect for roasting, soups, pies, or simply mashing with a touch of butter. One of the best features of Sweet Keeper is its exceptional storage ability. After harvesting just before the first frost and allowing the fruits to cure in a warm, dry spot for a week or two, they can keep for months in a cool, dry pantry or basement, offering winter-long enjoyment. The flavor is rich and nutty, with a creamy texture that makes every bite satisfying. Growing Sweet Keeper is also a joy because it’s a reliable producer year after year, delivering fruit that’s consistent in size, shape, and taste. For gardeners seeking a squash that combines beauty, long shelf life, and exceptional flavor, Sweet Keeper is a standout choice. Watching the vines fill the garden with lush greenery and then harvesting these golden fruits is a reward in itself, making Sweet Keeper a must-try heirloom for anyone serious about winter squash."
