Growing Orange Magic Hybrid Squash in the Vegetable Garden

Orange Magic F1 Hybrid Squash is a warm-season vegetable that can be grown in most of the country. It differs from summer squash in that it is harvested and eaten in the mature fruit stage when the seeds within have matured fully, and the skin has hardened into a tough rind. When ripened to this stage, fruits can be stored for use throughout the winter. Orange Magic F1 Hybrid Squash thrives in full sun and should be planted after the final spring frost. Grow in well-drained, moist, nutrient-rich soil with a pH of 6.5-7.0.

While squash is best sown directly in the soil when it has started to warm, it can be started indoors 3-4 weeks before the last frost. Keep the soil temperature between 70-85 F. Plant 2-3 seeds per pot or cell. Using biodegradable pots, like peat or coco coir pots, can help minimize root damage during transplanting. Germination typically occurs within 4 to 14 days. Transplant outdoors once the frost risk has passed, spacing plants 18-24 inches apart in rows 4-6 feet apart. Squash may also be grown in clusters or “hills” rather than traditional rows. Once seedlings are established, thin them to 3-5 plants, spaced a few inches apart in clusters, with a spacing of 6-10 feet between clusters.

Orange Magic F1 Hybrid Squash benefits from a top layer of mulch to help cool soil and roots. Fertilize after the first set of blooms appears and again during the fruiting stage. Keep well-watered. Harvesting Orange Magic Hybrid Squash

Orange Magic F1 Hybrid Squash can be harvested when the fruits have turned a deep, solid color, the stem is firm, and the rind is tough, resisting a fingernail. Harvest the main part of the crop in September or October, before heavy frosts hit your area. Cut the squash from the vine carefully, using shears, and leave about 2-4 inches of stem attached, if possible. Avoid cuts and bruises when handling. Fruits that are not fully mature, have been injured, have had their stems knocked off, or have been subjected to heavy frost do not keep well, and should be used as soon as possible or be composted.

Once harvested, leave the squash out to naturally cure in the sun for 10-14 days. The curing process will help winter squash last up to 3 months longer after harvesting. Wipe any debris off the skin before storing it in a dry, cool, and dark place with temperatures of 50-55 F and 50-65% humidity. For prolonged storage, do not pile squash more than two fruits deep. It is preferable, where space allows, to place the fruits in a single layer so that they do not touch each other. This arrangement minimizes the potential spread of roots.
