Growing Moore Gold Winter Squash in the Vegetable Garden
Sow Moore Gold seeds 1 inch deep in warm soil after the last frost. Direct sowing is recommended, or start indoors 3-4 weeks before transplanting. Plant 2-3 seeds per mound, then thin to 1 plant. Space plants 8-12 feet apart with rows 8-12 feet apart to allow vines to spread freely.
Use mulch to retain soil moisture and keep roots cool. Fertilize after the first blooms and again at the time of fruiting. Monitor for pests and provide trellising or vine training if needed.
Harvesting Moore Gold Winter Squash
Harvest when rinds are hard and stems solid, generally around 100 days from sowing. Cut fruit with 4 inches of stem attached. Cure in a warm, dry area for 10-14 days to extend storage life. Moore Gold stores well and improves in sweetness after curing.

Stories From Our Gardeners
"Moore Gold winter squash is a standout in any garden, especially if you love a squash that’s as beautiful as it is versatile. The vines are vigorous and sprawling, so give them plenty of space to grow. They'll happily stretch across a generous patch, twining around anything nearby if you let them. The fruits themselves are a showstopper: smooth, deep golden skin that practically glows in the sunlight, and a dense, sweet orange flesh that’s perfect for all kinds of cooking. From roasting and soups to pies or purees, Moore Gold delivers consistently rich, nutty flavor that improves with a few weeks of curing. I always harvest mine before the first frost and leave them in a warm, dry spot to harden up for a week or two. Once cured, they store beautifully in a cool, dry location, making them a dependable winter staple. One year, I left a few in the pantry until March, and they were still firm and sweet enough to star in a hearty soup. Growing Moore Gold feels like you’re planting both flavor and resilience in your garden. Moore Gold rewards your care with fruit that looks stunning on the vine and tastes even better on the plate. For gardeners with room to let a squash sprawl, Moore Gold is one of those rare varieties that delivers beauty, flavor, and long-lasting storage all at once."
