Growing Hubbard White Winter Squash in the Vegetable Garden
Sow seeds 1 inch deep after frost when the soil is warm. Direct sow in hills or rows, or start indoors 3-4 weeks early in biodegradable pots to avoid root disturbance. Space plants 36-48 inches apart, with 60-72 inches between rows to give vines room to run.
Keep soil evenly moist; mulch to conserve water and suppress weeds. Feed with compost or a balanced fertilizer at planting and again when vines run. Encourage pollinators and avoid overhead watering to limit mildew. Companion well with corn and beans; avoid potatoes.
Harvesting of Hubbard White Winter Squash
Harvest when rinds are hard and fully colored and stems are dry and corky—before hard frost. Cut fruit, leaving 2-3 inches of stem. Cure for 10-14 days in a warm, dry, well-ventilated place around 80 to 85 F, then store in a cool, dry place. Properly cured fruits keep for months.
