100 to 110 Days to full maturity. Cucurbita moschata Calabaza de Castilla Winter Squash Seeds. Annual, Non-GMO, Heirloom. This winter squash pumpkin variety has a rustic light brown color, with hard skin. At full maturity, there are deep ridges on the surface. Calabaza is the word for pumpkin in Spanish. This is a large fruit, weighing about fifteen to twenty pounds. The rinds are brown, the flesh is a rich deep orange. This winter squash is also known as a traditional variety of France, Musquee de Provence, or Fairytale Squash. It has very vigorous lengthy vines, growing sometimes up to 50 feet in length. Approximately 170 seeds / oz.
Prepare fertile, well-drained soil. Sow seeds in the spring soon after the last frost. These take a while to grow, so it's important to plant as soon as possible. Warm soil is needed, at least 70°F. Form the soil into a one-foot diameter mound three or four inches tall. Space the mounds four to eight feet apart. On each mound plant one seed, or two if desired but thin to one plant per mound. Keep the soil moist and fertilize as needed.
Harvesting Calabaza de Castilla Winter Squash
Harvest when the squash rind is hard, and the squash has turned completely brown, looking somewhat like a light brown pumpkin. Cut the squash from the vine with a knife, leaving a few inches of stem.
After harvest, winter squash should be left in the sun for a few days to cure before storing.
This can be used in a variety of dishes and can be prepared like pumpkin for pie or used in any dish that calls for winter squash. A traditional recipe is the Calabaza en Tacha, which is a Mexican candied pumpkin recipe.
