Growing Winter Blue Banana in the Vegetable Garden
Winter Blue Banana Squash grows best in fertile, well-drained soil with plenty of space for its vigorous vines. Direct sow seeds once the soil has warmed, or start indoors 3-4 weeks early for a head start. Plant in hills or rows with ample spacing to allow fruits to mature to full size. Mulching helps retain moisture and reduces weed competition.
Keep soil consistently moist during germination and fruit set. Fertilize with compost tea or a balanced organic fertilizer throughout the season to promote healthy vines and large fruits.
Harvesting Winter Blue Banana
Fruits are ready when rinds are firm, bluish-gray, and resist scratching with a fingernail. Harvest by cutting with several inches of stem attached. Cure squash in a warm, dry location for 10-14 days, then store in a cool, dry place. Properly stored, Winter Blue Banana can last for months, providing sweet, rich squash well into the winter.

Stories/Tips From Our Gardeners
"Winter Blue Banana squash is one of those heirloom varieties that stops you in your tracks the first time you see it. The fruits are long and tapered, with smooth, powdery blue-gray skin that looks almost ornamental, but inside is where the magic really happens. The flesh is a brilliant deep orange, dense and sweet with a flavor that reminds me of roasted chestnuts crossed with sweet potatoes. It’s one of the most versatile squashes I’ve grown. It’s perfect for roasting, mashing, soups, and even desserts. The vines are vigorous and sprawling, so give them plenty of space to run; they’ll reward you with hefty fruits that often weigh in at 10-15 pounds each. Harvest just before the first hard frost, cure the squash in a warm, dry spot for one to two weeks, and then store them in cool conditions. Properly cured, Winter Blue Banana can last for months, keeping its sweetness and firm texture well into late winter. One year, I pulled one out in January for a hearty stew, and it was as flavorful as the day I picked it. Beyond the kitchen, their unusual color and impressive size make them a striking addition to any fall harvest display. For gardeners who love a squash that’s both beautiful and practical, Winter Blue Banana is a variety worth growing year after year. It’s a true heirloom treasure that delivers in looks, flavor, and storage."
