Growing Black Jade Hybrid in the Vegetable Garden
Sow seeds 1 inch deep in warm soil (60 F or higher) after the last frost. Space plants 24–36 inches apart, with rows 36-48 inches apart. Starting indoors 3-4 weeks prior to transplanting can extend the season.
Keep soil moist and well-drained; mulch to conserve moisture and control weeds. Monitor regularly for pests and diseases and treat as needed.
Harvesting Black Jade Hybrid
Harvest when fruits are 6-8 inches long and the skin is glossy. (Typically 50-60 days after planting). Frequent harvesting encourages continuous production.

Stories From Our Gardeners
"Black Jade Summer Squash is a popular hybrid that gardeners and cooks love for its beautiful, deep green color and delicious taste. This summer squash grows on a compact plant that doesn’t take up too much space, making it perfect for smaller gardens or containers. The squash itself is slender and smooth, with tender skin that doesn’t need peeling. When harvested young, it has a mild, sweet flavor with a hint of nuttiness, making it very versatile in the kitchen. You can eat it raw in salads, sauté it quickly with garlic and olive oil, or grill it for a smoky twist. Its firm texture holds up well when cooked, so it doesn’t become mushy like some other summer squashes. Black Jade matures fairly quickly, usually ready to pick about 50 to 60 days after planting. It grows best in warm weather and needs plenty of sunlight and well-drained soil to thrive. Because it’s a hybrid, Black Jade tends to be more resistant to common squash diseases like powdery mildew and squash vine borers, making it easier to grow even for beginners. This squash produces high yields throughout the summer, providing a steady supply of fresh, tasty vegetables.
