Growing Carmel Hybrid Spinach in the Vegetable Garden
Direct sow Carmel hybrid spinach as soon as soil can be worked in spring and nighttime temperatures are above freezing. Spinach prefers cool soil, so aim for 45-70 F at seeding. Sow seeds 0.5 inch deep in rows 12-18 inches apart. For full-sized leaves, sow about 10 seeds per foot and thin to 2-4 inches between plants; for dense baby-leaf production, sow more thickly and harvest earlier.
For fall crops, sow in late summer as days begin to shorten, or in protected structures for fall to spring harvests. Keep soil consistently moist for rapid, even growth, and use a light mulch to help keep roots cool in warmer spells. Carmel’s upright habit and semi-savoyed leaves make it easy to keep foliage clean and to harvest quickly for bunches or baby greens.
Harvesting of Carmel Hybrid Spinach
Begin cutting baby leaves at about 3-5 weeks from sowing when leaves are a few inches long. Use a sharp knife or scissors to harvest outer leaves or to clip entire plants an inch above the crown for cut-and-come-again production. Allow regrowth between harvests for a longer picking window.
For full-size bunching, let plants reach about 40 days, with well-expanded but still tender leaves. Harvest in the cool of the morning for best texture, and cool quickly after cutting. Try to harvest before plants begin to bolt in response to heat or lengthening days, especially on late-spring sowings.
About Carmel Hybrid Spinach Garden Seeds
Carmel is an F1 hybrid spinach selected for uniform, upright plants with semi-savoyed dark-green leaves that work beautifully for both baby and full-size markets. High resistance to downy mildew, races 1-11 and 13 helps maintain clean stands and reliable yields in cool, damp conditions.
Its quick maturity and strong regrowth make Carmel an excellent choice for succession sowings in spring and fall. Grow it in garden plots, raised beds, or containers for salads, sautés, smoothies, and cooked dishes whenever you want abundant, high-quality spinach leaves.
Tips From Our Gardeners
"Sow Carmel into cool, moist soil and replant every 7-10 days for a steady harvest. Thin to 2-4 inches for sturdy plants, keep beds evenly watered, and harvest in the morning when leaves are crisp and sweet."
