Growing Non-GMO Scabiosa Blue Note Flower Seeds
For early blooming, start Blue Note scabiosa seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the final frost date. Scabiosa seeds will germinate in 2-3 weeks. Once germinated, move to a fluorescent grow light until two sets of true leaves have developed. Transplant Blue Note scabiosa seedlings to an indoor container or pot and harden them off if transplanting outside. Scabiosa seeds can also be sown directly once the frost has passed, but blooming will occur later in the season. For direct sowing, lightly cover 3-4 Blue Note scabiosa seeds in soil 12 inches apart in average, medium moist, and well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Blue Note seeds thrive in well-drained soil. Avoid overhead watering by watering soil directly to minimize wetting foliage. Plants will benefit from partial shade during severe summers.
Scabiosas will bloom from mid-spring throughout the summer once established. During the first year of planting, you may only see blooms for the summer depending on your planting time. Fertilize in the spring with compost or your plant food of choice. They don’t need much. Always follow manufacturers’ instructions. Scabiosas are hardy and easygoing but should be protected from cold, wet conditions when possible. Deadheading will extend the blooming season. Continue deadheading throughout the summer to avoid self-seeding. If allowed to self-seed, thin seedlings when they come up in the spring. In the fall, cut plants down to soil level, they will rejuvenate in the spring.

Stories From Our Gardeners
"I adore scabiosa because they remind me of a small and unique version of ornamental allium. I have always loved allium blooms, but pincushion flowers are smaller and easier to manage in my experience."
