Growing Non-GMO Salvia Evolution Violet Flower Seeds

Most North American home gardens do not have the humid and warm conditions to sow salvia seeds directly. However, for annual blooming, start salvia Evolution Violet seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the final frost. Evolution Violet salvia will germinate with full lighting. Once germinated, transplant seedlings to indoor containers or harden off gradually if transplanting outside to a proper area. For direct sowing, plant 3-4 salvia Evolution Violet seeds 0.125 inches deep in warm, evenly moist, and well-drained soil in full sun. Salvia will grow as a perennial in warm, humid gardens and will easily wilt in cooler and drier climates. Provide light afternoon shade and cut-back spent blooms to promote lasting vigor throughout the season. Salvia Evolution Violet will bloom repeatedly throughout the summer, but may require extra watering.

Salvia blooms throughout the first summer and will die back at the first frost but will come back next year in zones 9 and above. Evolution Violet salvia is known to tolerate some drought. It is recommended to use a slow-release fertilizer or simply work plenty of organic compost into the soil each spring to encourage growth. Salvia plants do not require fertilization past an annual boost. Use mulch or other means to keep weeds down. Cut back fading flower spikes to promote more flowers and prevent reseeding if desired.

Salvia will self-seed and volunteers will come up the following year if seeds are not collected. They easily spread to fill in open areas if left alone in ideal conditions.
