Growing Non-GMO Salpiglossis Royale Series Flower Seeds
Start Royale Series salpiglossis seeds should be started indoors, in darkness, 6-8 weeks before the final frost date. Salpiglossis seeds may be slow to germinate and require 2-4 weeks. Keep moist until germination. Once germinated, move to a fluorescent grow light for 16 hours of light per day until two sets of true leaves have developed. Transplant Royale Series seedlings to an indoor container or pot, and then proceed with hardening off if transplanting outside. For direct sowing, plant 3-4 salpiglossis Royale Series seeds 0.25 inch deep and 12 inches apart in moist, fertile, and well-drained soil in a cool spot with full sun to partial shade.
Royale Series salpiglossis thrives in cool summer gardens and will show signs of wilting if not shaded in the long summer heat. Cool and well-shaded gardens promote continued blooming well into summer. In hot summer gardens, favor providing afternoon shade during the hottest part of the day. Salpiglossis prefers cool roots and benefits from a layer of mulch. For a bushier growth habit, when the plants are 4 inches tall, pinch off the tip of the young plants. For the most amount of blooms, fertilize the plants with a half-strength fertilizer about every two weeks throughout the summer. Deadhead regularly and provide staking or support if desired.
Salpiglossis Royale Series in the Flower Garden
This Royale Series Salpiglossis is most commonly used as a statement piece in flower gardens. The lush, yet compact bushes have unique blooms that undeniably draw attention to themselves. The annual looks beautiful when paired with other shade-tolerant and cool weather loving plants, such as sweet alyssum and begonias.
Landscape Use of Salpiglossis Royale Series
Salpiglossis bushes are perfect for decorative planters and pots to go on patios or porches. Try them as a unique addition to annual beds, borders and in shaded corners of the yard in hot climates. They will always bring beauty and style to the mix.
About Salpiglossis Royale Series Garden Seeds
Despite the bushy habit, Salpiglossis make excellent cut flowers that bring dramatic colors and styles to any arrangement. To harvest as a cut flower, snip off the bloom as far down the stem as possible and then store it in cold water to prolong its life. Change out the water every one to two days for indoor color lasting 1-2 weeks.
Salpiglossis sinuata can also be known as the painted tongue plant, the Scalloped Tube Tongue, or the Velvet Trumpet Flower.
Salpiglossis sinuata is native to southern Chile and was only introduced to the Northern Hemisphere in the 1820s. It thrives in cool gardens because, although native to South America, it grew much closer to the Antarctic than to the equator. Salpiglossis is also commonly known as Painted Tongue, Scalloped Tube Tongue, or Velvet Trumpet Flower.
Salpiglossis bushes are also deer resistant, making them perfect for all those gardens that frequently battle the forest friends’ appetites.
All parts of this plant are considered poisonous and should not be ingested by people or animals. Cal a doctor or veterinarian with questions or concerns.
