Growing Non-GMO Rudbeckia Cherokee Sunset Flower Seeds

Cherokee Sunset rudbeckia can be sown directly, just like a wildflower, or, for container growth, started 8-10 weeks indoors before the final frost. For direct broadcasting, blend rudbeckia seeds with sand to increase visibility and broadcast the mix over a 10-square-foot area, and evenly rake and tamp. Cherokee Sunset rudbeckia requires long days and full sun to flower, and will continue to produce and diminish in quality and quantity into the fall. Cut back deteriorating foliage, leaves, and blooms throughout the season to help prolong vitality. Cherokee Sunset tolerates some shade, but full shade will reduce flowering and vigor. Rudbeckias will benefit from partial shade in severe summers.

Rudbeckia can bloom the first summer. It dies back at the first frost, but often comes back for a 2nd or 3rd year. We recommend using a slow-release fertilizer or working organic compost into the soil each spring to boost growth. Rudbeckias do not require much fertilization beyond this annual feeding. Cut back the flower stems throughout the season, and trim the entire plant back just before or after the first hard frost of fall. Do not cut back the basal foliage, just the flower stalks.
