Growing Rose Mallow Lavatera Garden Seeds

Rose Mallow lavatera is adaptable and frost-hardy and can either be sown indoors or out. For earliest and most vibrant blooms, begin 6-8 weeks prior to the frost. Lavatera has a wildflower-like habit and can also be sown by broadcasting directly two weeks before the final frost date, since the chill will help seeds germinate. Blend Rose Mallow lavatera seeds with sand to increase visibility during sowing and broadcast mix over a 10-square foot area and evenly rake and lightly tamp into soil. Plants may reseed in some areas. For traditional sowing, plant 2-3 Rose Mallow lavatera seeds ½" deep and 24" apart in average, medium moisture, and well-drained soil in full sun. Rose Mallow lavatera is a hardy full sun performer, but will benefit from shade during long summer months. Plants can tolerate heavy moisture, but still susceptible to bacteria and fungi which cause root rot and leaf spots. Lavatera has no serious pests or diseases but monitor regularly for aphids. Rose Mallow lavatera seeds mature in 63-70 days days as 24-48" shrubby uprights 24-36" wide with 3-4" open cup-shaped blooms in shades of creamy creamy pink, blush, and rose.

Lavatera trimestris, or more commonly known as Rose Mallow, is native to the Mediterranean region and its cool temperate regions. The genus lavatory pays homage to 17th century Swiss naturalist J.R. Lavater. Lavatera trimestris has also been awarded Britain's Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit.
