How to Grow Rhubarb Guide
Growing Organic Crimson Red Rhubarb Roots
Plant in early spring (March-April) as soon as the soil is workable. Select a permanent, sunny location (full sun preferred, partial shade tolerated) with rich, well-draining soil. Dig a hole wide and deep enough to spread out the roots, planting the crown so that the bud is about 2 inches below the soil surface. Space plants about 36 inches apart.
Keep well-watered until new growth is established. Do not harvest in the first year; this allows the root system to become well-established. In year two, harvest sparingly (only a few stalks), and by year three, harvest more normally. Remove flower stalks to direct energy toward stalk production rather than seed. Divide crowns every 4-5 years to maintain vigor.
Crimson Red Rhubarb in the Vegetable Garden
Crimson Red makes a stunning and reliable addition to perennial edible beds or vegetable landscapes. The vibrant red stalks add both color and utility, and the plants reward gardeners for decades when given the right location.
Harvesting Crimson Red Rhubarb
Harvest stalks by cutting near the crown, avoiding the leaves (which are toxic). Harvest during spring to early summer when stalks are firm and brightly colored. Stop harvesting by mid-summer to allow foliage to replenish the root’s energy for the next season.
About Crimson Red Rhubarb
Crimson Red (also called Crimson Cherry or Crimson Wine) is a long-established, beloved rhubarb variety known for its deep red stalks, both inside and out, consistent, flavorful stalks, and reliable productivity. It remains a favorite for its sweet-tart, fiber-free texture and vigorous perennial performance.
Stories From Our Gardeners
"As with asparagus, waiting for a couple of years while the rhubarb crowns get established takes a bit of self-discipline, but it pays off in the end."
