70 Days to maturity. Raphanus sativus. Shogoin Globe Radish Seeds. Cool Season Annual, Heirloom. Shogoin Globe radishes are round daikon radishes that grow quite large–up to 7 inches in diameter! This variety’s roots do most of their growing aboveground, making them a great choice for clay or compacted soils. They have firm, crunchy white flesh and pale green shoulders ideal for pickling or cooking. Children might enjoy watching Shogoin Globe radishes grow above the soil! Plant in late summer or early fall for a winter harvest. ~ 3,800 seeds / oz.
Other Common Names:Daikon radish, Japanese radish, globe radish
How to Grow Shogoin Globe Radishes
Choose a location with full sun, and add fertilizer, organic matter, or other amendments as needed. Avoid adding too much nitrogen as it will encourage excessive leaf growth. Sow seeds 1/2" deep and thin seedlings 6 to 9 inches apart after germination. Rows should be 12 to 18 inches apart. Keep soil consistently moist and harvest when roots have reached the desired size.
Harvesting Globe Radishes
Globe radishes can be difficult to pull due to their unique shape so dig up your radishes with a shovel or gardening fork for best results. The longer you wait to harvest, the more spicy and pungent the radishes will be! Remove the tops and store in the refrigerator.
Worried that a freeze or unexpected heat wave will damage your crop? If your radishes have had some time to grow already, harvest them early to avoid bitter, tough roots.
Shogoin Globe radishes are best eaten cooked or pickled. Some great options include kenchinjiru (a Japanese vegetable soup), daikon miso soup, or roasted radish slices! Radishes are sometimes used for kimchi as well. If you enjoy the flavor, slice them and eat raw!
Tips From Our Gardeners
"I’m a big fan of daikon radish, especially because of its mild flavor. I like using it as a substitute for regular radishes. Try it yourself! They make a great salad topping, especially with a vinaigrette or light dressing."
- Katie Robinson, True Leaf Market Writer and Horticulture Student
Fertile, well-draining soil; pH should be 5.6-6.5.
Pests and Disease:
Radishes are usually unaffected by diseases because they are harvested quickly, but some fungal diseases (such as downy mildew) may occur. Additionally, other diseases could occur if planted in the same spot as other Brassicas. Pest damage is typically from root maggots, cabbage loopers, and harlequin bugs.
