30 to 40 Days to maturity. Raphanus sativus. Shunkyo Chinese Radish Heirloom Seeds. Cool Season Annual. Shunkyo radishes are a hidden gem that originates from Northern China. These radishes grow to 8 inches long, are slow to bolt, and mature quickly, making them an easy crop to grow! Their dark pink skin conceals soft white flesh that has a delightful crunch. Hot, sweet, and colorful, this variety is a must-try for your garden. Plant them throughout your whole growing season, and harvest their tasty roots all summer. ~ 3,180 seeds / oz.
Radishes need soft, loose soil to grow straight and reach their full size. Break up your soil and mix in sand if needed before planting. Shunkyo radishes are slow to bolt so you may plant them throughout the season. Sow 1 seed every inch in rows 6 to 12 inches apart, and thin seedlings 3 inches apart after they sprout. Water them consistently for the best flavor and texture.
Harvesting Chinese Radishes
Shunkyo radishes mature quickly and will lose their flavor just as fast, so be ready to harvest as soon as they are 4 to 8 inches long. Harvesting by pulling carefully or digging. For best results, store in the fridge or another cool, dry place after removing the tops.
Don’t just throw away those tops–Shunkyo radish tops are tender, delicious, and almost completely free of spines! Plus, their stems have a lovely hint of pink.
Lean into the Shunkyo radish’s natural spice and add to hot and sour soup, or make a crisp, fresh radish salad. Not a big fan of heat? Try grating it and then using it as a topping for burgers, noodle dishes, or anything you’d like! Use the tops in stir-fries or soups.
Stories From Our Gardeners
"It can be difficult to know when your radishes are ready, I know that from experience! I doubted that anything could grow that quickly, but I found out the hard way that radishes need to be harvested right away or they lose their flavor. Moral of the story? Harvest your radishes earlier rather than later!"

Well-drained soil that is high in organic matter with a pH of 5.8-6.8.
Pests and Disease:
While generally pest and disease-resistant, radishes can be a target for root maggots and flea beetles. Watch for signs of infestation and treat as needed. Additionally, common fungal diseases like root rot or powdery mildew may occur with improper watering.
