Growing Galeaux d'Eysines Pumpkin in the Vegetable Garden
Direct sow Galeaux d'Eysines after the last frost once soil has warmed to at least 70 F. Plant seeds 1 inch deep, spacing 36-48 inches apart in rows 4-6 feet apart, or sow 3-4 seeds per hill and thin to the strongest plant. Choose a sunny location with rich, well-drained soil and plenty of room for vines to sprawl.
Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged, especially during flowering and fruit set. Side-dress with compost or a balanced fertilizer once vines begin to run. A light mulch helps suppress weeds and conserve moisture. Avoid crowding plants, as good airflow helps limit powdery mildew on foliage late in the season.
Harvesting of Galeaux d'Eysines Pumpkin
Galeaux d'Eysines is ready to harvest when fruits reach full salmon-pink color, and the tan, peanut-like warts are well developed. The rind should be firm and resist puncture with a fingernail, and the vines will begin to dry down. Cut pumpkins from the vine with a few inches of stem attached.
Cure fruits in a warm, dry, well-ventilated space for about 10 days, then store in a cool, dry area. Properly cured Galeaux d'Eysines can keep for several months. The sweet, fine-textured orange flesh is excellent roasted, pureed into soups, or baked into pies where its natural sugars shine.
About Galeaux d'Eysines Pumpkin Garden Seeds
Originating near Eysines in the Bordeaux region of France, Galeaux d'Eysines is a historic heirloom winter squash often listed as a pumpkin or specialty squash. Its name refers to the embroidered or warty appearance of the rind, formed by sugar-rich flesh pushing against the skin.
Also known as peanut pumpkin or Warted Sugar Marrow, this variety produces 10-20 lb, flattened-globe fruits with dramatic tan warts that make stunning fall centerpieces. Beneath the whimsical exterior, the flesh is smooth, moist, and deeply flavored, making Galeaux d'Eysines a favorite for soups, stews, and richly spiced pies as well as decorative displays.
Tips From Our Gardeners
"Give Galeaux d'Eysines plenty of elbow room and rich soil. Train vines away from paths, water deeply but infrequently, and wait to harvest until the warts and color are fully developed—then cure well for the sweetest soups and pies of the season."
