How to Grow Potatoes Guide 🥔
Growing Non-GMO Red Norland Seed Potatoes
Upon arrival, encourage sprouting (“chitting”) by placing tubers in a warm, bright spot with good airflow until sprouts reach about 1 inch. Plant seed potatoes 3-4 inches deep in loose soil once the ground can be worked. Space 12-15 inches apart in rows 30-36 inches apart. Begin hilling when plants are about 8 inches tall and repeat to build 8-12 inch mounds, keeping developing tubers covered to prevent greening.
Fertilize at planting and again after emergence with balanced nutrition. Water deeply and consistently through early and mid-season. Reduce irrigation as vines naturally begin to die back late in the season. Rotate planting locations every 3-4 years to limit disease build-up.
Red Norland in the Vegetable Garden
A classic early red potato for kitchen gardens, reliable, attractive plants that yield smooth-skinned tubers perfect for fresh eating. Works in raised beds and larger containers when hilled properly.
Harvesting Red Norland Seed Potatoes
For “new” potatoes, dig gently once plants flower and tubers size up. For main-crop harvest, wait until vines yellow and die back, then leave tubers in the ground 2-3 weeks to set skins. Lift carefully with a fork 12-18 inches from the plant crown to avoid punctures. Brush off soil and cure in a cool, dark, well-ventilated place. For longer storage, hold around 45 F with 90-95 percent humidity.
About Red Norland Seed Potatoes
Red Norland vs. Dark Red Norland: This product is Red Norland, a line selection derived from the original Norland released by North Dakota (1957). Dark Red Norland and other “New/Super Red Norland” selections exist, but are distinct strains. Red Norland is early-maturing with smooth red skin, white flesh, and is valued for fresh-market “new” potatoes.
Stories From Our Gardeners
"Red Norland is my go-to early red for tender ‘new’ potatoes, smooth skins, shallow eyes, and reliably tasty in salads or simply boiled with butter and herbs."
