Growing Cheese Yellow Peppers in the Vegetable Garden
Pepper plants love warmth, so begin by sowing your yellow pepper seeds indoors about 8-10 weeks before the last expected frost. You'll need a shallow container or seed tray filled with a well-draining seed starting mix. Plant the seeds about a quarter inch deep and cover lightly with soil. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, and place the container in a warm spot—peppers germinate best at temperatures between 70-85 F. If your home is on the cooler side, consider using a heat mat. You should see little sprouts in 1-2 weeks.
Once your pepper seedlings emerge, they need plenty of light to grow strong. A sunny windowsill or a grow light will do the trick. Keep the soil consistently moist and watch them grow! When seedlings have two sets of true leaves, it’s time to transplant them into individual pots. This gives them more room to grow and strengthens their root system.
Before moving your plants outside permanently, they need to get used to the outdoor environment—a process called hardening off. About two weeks before transplanting, begin by placing your plants outdoors in a shaded, protected area for a few hours each day, gradually increasing their exposure to sun and wind. This helps prevent shock and ensures they’ll be hearty when moved to their final outdoor spot.
Choose a sunny, well-draining spot in your garden for your yellow peppers. They love the sun and need at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. When the threat of frost has passed and nights are consistently above 55 F, it’s safe to transplant. Space plants about 18-24 inches apart to give them plenty of room to bush out. Dig a hole for each plant, gently remove the plant from its pot, and place it in the hole so that the soil level of the plant is even with the surrounding ground. Backfill with soil and water well.
Peppers aren’t too needy, but they do appreciate consistent moisture, especially as fruits start to form. Mulching around your plants can help retain soil moisture and keep weeds at bay. A balanced fertilizer applied every few weeks can encourage robust growth and fruiting. Optional pruning can be done by removing the lowest branches to encourage air circulation and reduce disease risk.
Harvesting Cheese Yellow Peppers
Your peppers are ready to harvest when they’re firm, bright yellow, and about 4-6 inches long. This typically begins between 80-90 days after transplanting. Gently cut the stem with scissors or a sharp knife. This method ensures you don’t damage the plant or the fruit. Peppers grow on branches that can be a bit brittle, so be gentle when harvesting to avoid breaking off branches. The more you harvest, the more your plant will produce!
About Cheese Yellow Pepper Garden Seeds
For short-term storage, keep your peppers in the vegetable drawer of your refrigerator. They should stay fresh for about 1-2 weeks. Ensure they're dry before refrigerating to avoid premature rotting.
For longer storage, you can freeze bell peppers. Cut them into strips or dice them, spread them out on a baking sheet to freeze individually, and then transfer them to a freezer bag. They'll last for about six months and are perfect for cooking directly from frozen.
These peppers are incredibly versatile in cooking. They can be sautéed, roasted, grilled, or stuffed. When cooked, Yellow Cheese bell peppers become even sweeter and can complement both meat and vegetarian dishes.
Planting yellow peppers near herbs like basil or oregano can help repel pests, and they make good neighbors with onions, spinach, and carrots. However, keep them away from beans and brassicas like cabbage and kale, as these can inhibit each other’s growth.
Tips From Our Gardeners
"Roasting Yellow Cheese bell peppers brings out their natural sweetness and adds a slight smokiness. You can roast them whole or in slices. Once roasted, the skins can be peeled off, and the peppers can be used in sandwiches, salads, pasta dishes, or as a topping for pizzas."
