Growing Habanero Fatalii Pepper in the Vegetable Garden

Fatalii peppers require a long, warm growing season and should always be started indoors. Sow seeds 0.25 inch deep in a warm location 8 to 10 weeks before your last expected frost date, keeping soil temperature at 80 to 90 F for best germination — a heat mat is strongly recommended for this species. Transplant seedlings outdoors only after nighttime temperatures are consistently above 55 F and the soil has warmed to at least 65 F, spacing plants 18 to 24 inches apart in rows 24 to 36 inches apart. Choose a full sun location with well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Peppers perform well in both garden beds and containers — a 5- to 7-gallon container with good drainage and full sun will produce an attractive and productive plant.

Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, and water at the base of the plant rather than overhead to reduce disease risk. Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizer, which pushes leafy growth at the expense of fruit production. Once plants begin flowering, switch to a fertilizer higher in phosphorus and potassium. Fatalii plants are naturally compact and generally do not require staking, though heavily fruiting plants in containers may benefit from a small support. In frost-free climates or indoors, peppers can be overwintered and will produce the following season again.

Fatalii peppers are ready to harvest when fruits have turned fully golden yellow, are firm to the touch, and show the characteristic wrinkled texture. They can also be harvested green and unripe, though peak flavor and heat develop at full maturity. Use scissors or pruning shears to cut peppers from the plant rather than pulling, which can break brittle branches. Always wear gloves when handling Fatalii peppers — the capsaicin content is high enough to cause significant skin and eye irritation. Fresh peppers will keep 1 to 2 weeks refrigerated. The thin walls of the Fatalii make it an outstanding drying pepper — slice lengthwise and dry at low heat, then crush into flakes or grind into a uniquely citrusy chili powder.
