Growing Habanero Orange Peppers in the Vegetable Garden
To plant Habanero Orange peppers, you will need to start the planting process about 6-8 weeks before your area’s last frost date. Plant the seeds in either a well-draining soil or in a seed starting mix like Minute Soil Coco Clair. The pH of the soil should be about 6.5. Plant the seeds about 0.25 inches deep. Try to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. You can check whether you need to water your plants by sticking your finger into the soil - if it feels dry, then give your plants some water, but make sure not to overwater. If the soil looks wet, then wait for it to dry out a bit before you water your plants next. Keep your peppers in a warm spot for germination, somewhere around 80-90 F. You can use a grow light to create a warmer space that will help them germinate. After about 7-10 days, they should germinate, and you can move them to a cooler spot so they can be hardened off before you plant them in the garden. Make sure to cover the roots completely as you are planting the seedlings. Space them about 12-18 inches apart and space rows 2-3 feet apart. Try to choose an area of your garden that has not been used for other nightshades recently. Make sure you aren’t planting hot and sweet pepper varieties close to each other to avoid cross-pollination.
Keep a close eye on your Habanero Orange peppers & take good care of them throughout the growing process to make sure they produce a bountiful harvest! Water them consistently, especially during dry periods. You can sprinkle some mulch around the base of the plant to keep the moisture in and suppress any weeds. Companion planting with plants like marigolds and basil can help keep pests away and bring pollinators to your garden. You can also try treating them to a fertilizer packed with phosphorus and calcium for that extra boost of nutrients they need. Make sure to support the plants with stakes or trellises, which will help them grow upright and will support the plant as they grow fruit. And keep an eye on your peppers - if you spot any pests or diseases, make sure to treat them immediately!
Harvesting Habanero Orange Peppers
As they mature, Habanero Orange peppers will turn from a green to orange. This variety will be ready for harvest about 90 days after transplanting. Since these are hot peppers with some heat, they're tasty both when fully ripe or premature - as they ripen, they’ll become a bright orange color. To harvest the pepper, you can cut the stem with garden shears of a knife. Make sure to be gentle and not damage the plant so it can keep producing fruit! Because this is a hot variety, make sure you wear gloves and wash your hands immediately after harvest.
About Habanero Orange Pepper Garden Seeds
Hot peppers, such as the Habanero cultivar, are typically used to create hot sauce and salsas that are eaten with Mexican, South American, and Tex-Mex cuisine. However, due to the popularity of habanero peppers, you'll also find a wide variety of modern recipes that use the hot, spicy pepper, including habanero pepper jelly.
Because of its heat - about 40 times that of the Jalapeno - the Habanero is commonly used in hot sauces or salsas.
Orange habanero hot peppers are an excellent source of capsaicin, which is thought to aid in the prevention of obesity, the lowering of cholesterol, and the control of blood pressure.
Make sure these peppers have enough room and support, so grow them in garden plots or raised beds!
Tips From Our Gardeners
"When preparing food with orange habanero chili peppers, you should always use caution because the capsaicin in the pepper can cause a painful, burning sensation. It's a good idea to wear gloves while handling the orange habanero pepper, and you should wash your hands thoroughly after cooking with hot peppers. Avoid touching your face and eyes, which can be more sensitive to the effects of capsaicin.”
