How to Grow Ishikura Improved Bunching Onion

Prepare fertile, well-drained soil. Sow seeds in a sunny location in late spring after danger of all frost is passed and when soil temperatures are consistently above 50° Fahrenheit, or plant in the fall. Keep the soil moist and fertilize as needed. White stems up to 28" can be achieved by mounding earth up over the stems. This will blanch the color as well as lengthen the stems.

Harvesting Ishikura Improved Bunching Onion

These bunching onions may be harvested at any stage, from the young thin stalks to the larger full-sized bunches of tall onions at full maturity. Plants are fully mature when the green leaves reach 6 inches long.

The younger plants can be harvested gradually, cutting off a few stems at a time. The stems will re-sprout. The plant can also be harvested at full maturity, by removing the entire plant.

Culinary Tips

These onions are great both cooked in a variety of recipes or raw, used as spring onions. This variety is especially popular in Japan for sukiyaki, soup, and salads. They can be boiled and served as a side dish with miso dressing.
