45 Days to maturity. Brassica juncea. Crimson Tide Mustard Seeds. Heirloom, Non-GMO, Open Pollinated. Annual. This mustard strongly resembles Ruby Streak. Its ornately fringed purple and green leaves deliver a peppery flavor that is milder than arugula and packed with nutrients. The thin green stalks are tasty as well, making this variety a perfect baby leaf salad green. Leaves become dark purple when growth temperatures are cool. Approx. 7,500 seeds / oz.
Prepare fertile, well-drained soil. For spring planting, sow the seeds directly in the garden after all danger of frost has past. For a fall harvest, plant in late summer to early fall. Find a sunny spot to plant, direct sun is best. This is a very fast growing variety of mustard, so successive plantings every few weeks will extend the time of harvest. Keep the soil well watered, moist but not damp, and it's best to water at ground level to keep the greens free of moisture. Fertilize if desired. Warmer temperatures will result in a more peppery flavor, while cooler temperatures will produce greens with a sweeter taste.
Harvesting Crimson Tide Mustard
Harvest Crimson Tide mustard at full maturity at about 45 days. But this quick grower can be harvested early for baby greens, after only 20 to 25 days. At full growth, crimson tide mustard is 6-8" tall, baby greens will be 3-4".
For a quick harvest, cut the whole plant at ground level when fully mature, but the lower stems can be harvested individually, these will resprout for a slightly longer harvest period.
Baby greens and full-sized greens are a great addition to salads, but crimson tide mustard can be stir-fried, sautéed, or roasted with other foods. This can be used in any recipe in place of any dark greens. Use your imagination, this can be a delicious addition to many side dishes!
