40-55 Days to maturity (baby leaf 20-25 days)Brassica juncea Crimson Red Mustard Seeds. F1 Hybrid, Non-GMO, Annual. This highly attractive new red mustard green from Japan can be harvested at any stage, depending on how you want to use it. Harvest young for salad and braising mixes, or for a gourmet garnish. This "green" has a very dark red color and a pretty leaf shape. The appearance and mildly spicy flavor add depth to any recipe. It retains the deep red leaf color even in the summer months. Approximately 7,500 seeds / oz.
Prepare fertile, well-drained soil. Seeds can be planted from spring to early fall. Ensure to wait until after the last spring frost to start planting, and plant in full sun. Be aware that the climate affects the flavor, warmer temperatures grow this mustard with a spicier flavor, cooler temperatures produce a sweeter tasting mustard green. Because this is a fast growing plant, reseeding in new beds every few weeks will extend the time that the greens can be harvested. Keep the soil moist, water low to avoid dampening the greens if possible. Fertilize as needed.
Harvesting Crimson Red Mustard
Crimson red mustard is fully mature at 40 to 55 days of growth, for the full rich red mustard leaves. Baby greens can be plucked at 20 to 25 days after planting.
This mustard is frost resistant, but freezing temperatures will kill the plant. If grown into the fall, a light frost just before harvest will add sweetness to the flavor.
As with any mustard greens, crimson red mustard can bue used in salads, and cooked into soups, stir-fried, sautéed, and roasted as a dark green in any recipe. This variety is adds a delicious fresh peppery highlight to dishes when chopped finely and used as a garnish, and sprinkled on anything from cole slaw to rice, soup, vegetable dishes, or meat and fish.
Certain pests can be troublesome: cabbage maggots, cabbage worms, cabbage loopers, flea beetles, aphids, slugs, whiteflies, and vegetable weevils can all be potential problems. For potential diseases, watch out for clubroot, damping off, downy mildew, Alternaria leaf spot, clubroot, and white rust.
