What is "Below Standard Seed"?
Simply put, it is seed that doesn't meet our state's (Utah) germination standard, a standard that varies slightly from seed to seed. Any seed intended for gardening that has a below standard germination rate cannot be sold alongside those that meet the state requirements (which often reflect the national requirements for germination).
We send samples of all our seed to the Utah Department of Agriculture, where they perform several tests to assess the quality of the seed. These state-wide and national seed standards are in line with Association of Official Seed Analysts (AOSA), which exist to ensure consumers that they are getting the highest quality seed, as advertised. Since this seed doesn't meet the state standard, we mark it as "Below Standard Seed".
Low germination seeds are non-refundable.

Growing Non-GMO Organic Starlight Mix Marigold Flower Seeds
If you want a head start on your marigold garden, sow the seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost date in your area. Marigold seeds should be sown, barely covered, in well-drained soil. For indoor sowing, plant the seeds in seed-starting trays filled with a light potting mix, like coconut coir and perlite, keeping them consistently moist until they germinate. The ideal germination temperature for marigolds is between 70-75 F, and seeds typically germinate in 4-5 days under optimal conditions. Plant 2-3 seeds per cell or pot, thinning them out once they are established to prevent overcrowding.
For transplanting, wait until all risk of frost has passed, and the seedlings have at least two sets of true leaves. Transplant the marigolds at least 12 inches apart. Marigolds prefer full sun, meaning they need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. In partial shade, the plants may grow leggy and produce fewer blooms. The Starlight Mix marigolds bloom continuously from early summer until the first frost. They have a compact, bushy growth habit.
Marigolds do not require much maintenance, but deadheading (removing spent blooms) will encourage continuous flowering. Pinching the tips of young plants can help promote a bushier growth habit and more flowers. Marigolds do quite well in fertile soil without fertilization. If your soil is very poor, use compost or a balanced organic fertilizer to promote better growth.
Organic Starlight Mix Marigold in the Flower Garden
In the landscape, the Marigold Starlight Mix is typically used as a border or bedding plant due to its compact size and long bloom period. It can also be mass-planted for a striking display of color. Because these marigolds are low-growing, they are perfect for lining the edges of pathways or garden beds. The vibrant colors of the flowers make them a great focal point in smaller garden spaces, containers, or hanging baskets.
Companion Planting With Organic Starlight Mix Marigold
Marigolds are excellent companion plants in vegetable gardens, especially in deterring pests. They repel harmful insects like whiteflies, nematodes, and mosquitoes. They also attract beneficial pollinators like bees and butterflies. Planting marigolds near vegetables such as tomatoes, beans, and cucumbers can improve pest control naturally. Avoid planting them near beans.
About Organic Starlight Mix Marigold Garden Seeds
Marigold Starlight Mix flowers and foliage are edible, offering a citrus-like flavor. The petals can be used as a garnish in salads, soups, or desserts, adding both color and flavor to dishes.
While marigold petals are safe for human consumption, it's important to note that their strong, spicy flavor may not appeal to everyone. Marigolds are non-toxic to pets, making them a safe choice for gardens frequented by dogs or cats.
Marigolds are native to Mexico and Central America and are culturally significant in many regions.
Stories From Our Gardeners
