30 to 40 Days to maturity. Raphanus sativus. Saisai Leaf Radish Hybrid Seeds. Annual. Leaf radishes are perfect for the gardener who wants tender, peppery radish greens that can be harvested quickly. Saisai leaf radishes are a Japanese variety that can be used for a variety of dishes, including stir-fries. This variety is also spineless meaning they can be consumed and harvested easily pain-free! Saisai radishes are slow to bolt so they can be planted year-round. ~ 1,300 seeds / oz.
Choose a location with good soil and full sun. Amend the soil as needed. Sow 25 seeds per foot in rows 12 to 18 inches apart; seeds should be planted 1/4" deep. Thin seedlings gradually to 1 plant every 3 to 4 inches. Water plants consistently and fertilize as needed. Plant rows in succession to spread out your harvest.
Harvesting Leaf Radishes
Harvest your leaf radishes once their leaves reach the desired size. They can be eaten as microgreens or fully grown at 12 inches tall. Cut plants at the base or pull up the entire plant. Store in the vegetable crisper in your fridge to keep them fresh and crisp.
Don’t throw away the seedlings you thin out! They are mild and tender at that size and make a great nutritious snack.
Leaf radishes have a variety of uses, both raw and cooked. If you can make it with mustard greens, you can make it with radish leaves! Serve in salads, make a healthy dip, or steam and serve with butter. Substitute for spinach in soups and stir-fries. Looking for something new? Try pickling them the Japanese way and make tsukemono!
Tips From Our Gardeners
"Leaf radishes can be planted densely and harvested quickly so I would recommend planting them successively for the best results. Plant one row every week and replant them as you harvest. You’ll have plenty of fresh radish greens all season!"
- Katie Robinson, True Leaf Market Writer and Horticulture Student
Saisai radishes grow quickly enough to avoid most pest and disease issues, but floating row covers can helpprotect leaves from root maggots and aphids. Excess dampness on the leaves can cause powdery mildew or other fungal diseases.
