This popular traditional Japanese hybrid komatsuna has glossy, thick dark green leaves and an upright growing habit. Summer Fest is an extra early komatsuna that is resistant to heat. It is especially suited for summer cropping and has a high tolerance to multiple diseases. Komatsuna is extremely underrated in the west. The summer fest variety is particularly well-suited for summer production. Approx. 10,600 seeds per ounce.

How to Grow Summer Fest Komatsuna
Sow the seeds any time of year that the earth is workable, even into autumn. Avoid hot summer planting for best results. Sow seeds every 2 weeks for continuous harvest. Keep soil moist and provide an open growing site. Fertilize if venation or paleness is present. Summer Fest is recommended for sowing from March to October sowing. It may be suitable if the temperatures are similar, in the winter, as in sub-tropic areas. However, it is not considered an all-year-round variety in general. Incorporate compost or mature manure into the earth to increase fertility and moisture retention. Summer Fest is outstanding for container sowing. Thin the seedlings once true leaves establish to desired spacing.
Harvesting Summer Fest Komatsuna
Like lettuce, harvest large outer leaves while allowing smaller leaves to mature. Optionally, give the plants time and space to grow and harvest the entire plant like unto cabbage. Harvest leaves and young stems when the plant is about 8 inches tall.
Culinary Tips
Consume komatsuna at any stage. It is excellent for salads, pickling, steaming, and stir fry. It can be substituted in a variety of recipes for any green such as cabbage, spinach, kale, and of course, other mustard greens!
