Non-GMO, Heirloom Purple Vienna seeds produce kohlrabi with purple bulbs and a light green interior. The flavor is mild, resembling the taste of a turnip. This unusual looking vegetable comes from northern Europe, and did not become common in the United States until after the civil war.
Sow the non-GMO seeds directly in the garden. The Purple Vienna Kohlrabi seeds thrive in well-drained soil with Organic matter, and the resulting plants will need a couple inches of water per week. Growth rate and health may be improved by companion planting with beets, celery, or cucumbers. Harvest the kohlrabi when it is 2 to 3 inches in diameter.
