Hot radishes are a unique and flavorful variety of daikon that get their name from their sharp kick! Their lower moisture content makes their flavor stronger. Award -winning Karaine hot radishes are a great choice whether you are a beginner, or a daikon expert! Expect them to grow around six inches long and three inches in diameter. How to Grow Karaine Hot Daikon Radishes
In the late summer to early fall, prepare a sunny location by enriching the soil and loosening with a gardening fork. Sow one seed every inch in rows 18 inches apart, and thin seedlings four to six inches out within a week or two of germination. Keep moisture levels consistent as too little water will cause roots to crack.
Harvesting Daikon Radishes
Daikon radishes take longer to mature than some other radishes, but they are worth it! Harvest by loosening the soil between rows and pulling roots carefully. Due to their size, daikon radishes can be susceptible to breakage.
These radishes store very well! Cut the tops off and refrigerate, dry, or pickle. Be sure to keep cold and damp in the fridge to prevent dying out. Zip-top bags and damp paper towels can help with this.
Use Karaine hot radishes anywhere you want to add a crunch and a kick! Grate and add to ramen, soup, or as a garnish. Use it to make tsuyu, a spicy dipping sauce, or as a burger topping. If you want a little less kick and a little more pungency, pickle your harvest and use everywhere. Sliced radishes could add texture and heat to a garden salad.

"Part of the fun of growing daikon radishes is their huge size. Want to make sure they stay big and spicy? I recommend using a low nitrogen fertilizer and giving them enough water. Too little water will stunt both growth and flavor, and high-nitrogen fertilizers will cause too much leaf growth."

Pests and Disease:
Downy and powdery mildew, along with other fungal diseases are possible but preventable. Other diseases may be spread by insects so treat pests if populations get large. Watch for cabbage loopers and harlequin beetles that will eat leaves and reduce overall yields.
