Growing Horehound in the Herb Garden
Sow horehound seeds 0.25 inches deep in well-draining soil. Seeds germinate best in full sun when direct-sown outdoors after frost, but they can also be started indoors 6-8 weeks before transplanting. Space plants 12-18 inches apart in rows 18-24 inches apart for healthy growth.
Horehound is drought-tolerant and requires minimal maintenance once established. Allow soil to dry slightly between waterings, as overly wet conditions can cause root problems. Companion plants such as other Mediterranean herbs—like sage, oregano, and thyme—do well nearby, and horehound attracts pollinators when in bloom.
Harvesting of Horehound
Harvest horehound leaves once plants are at least 8 inches tall, ideally just before flowering, for the strongest flavor and medicinal potency. Cut stems above the woody growth and allow new shoots to continue producing throughout the season.
Fresh or dried horehound is often used in teas, syrups, and candies to impart its distinct bittersweet flavor. A small amount also adds complexity to herbal blends and homemade remedies.
About Horehound Garden Seeds
Horehound (Marrubium vulgare) has been cultivated for centuries, tracing its use back to ancient Egypt and traditional European herbalism.
It is valued both as a hardy garden perennial and as a key ingredient in old-fashioned herbal cough drops and liqueurs.
This resilient plant thrives in poor soils, making it an excellent choice for low-maintenance herb gardens.
Tips From Our Gardeners
"Ancient Egyptians and European monks alike valued it as a bitter tonic and soothing ingredient in cough remedies."
