A vigorous perennial vine producing aromatic cones with herbal, spicy, and mild bittering qualities. Nugget is widely grown for brewing, but also makes an attractive climbing plant for trellises, fences, or arbors. Hardy and long-lived once established.

Growing Nugget Hops Roots
Plant roots in early spring after frost when the soil is workable. Choose a sunny location with well-drained, fertile soil and full sun to partial shade. Set roots 2-3 inches deep and provide strong vertical support such as a trellis, pole, or arbor. Hops are known to climb several feet with the proper support. Water regularly, especially during the first growing season.
Nugget Hops in the Garden
Nugget is a popular dual-purpose hop, used for both bittering and aroma in brewing. Its vigorous growth and climbing habit also make it an excellent ornamental vine.
Harvesting Nugget Hops
Harvest cones in late summer to early fall, when they feel dry and papery and have a strong aroma. Dry cones thoroughly for storage or brewing use.
About Nugget Hops
Released in 1983 by the USDA, Nugget is one of the most widely planted American hop varieties. Known for high yields and balanced flavor, it remains a staple for home and commercial brewers alike. Before its release, it was bred in the 1970’s.
