Growing Non-GMO Heliopsis Summer Sun Flower Seeds

Plant seeds in prepared soil. Soak the soil surrounding the seeds with a mister. Choose a spot in full sun with proper drainage. Summer Sun Heliopsis has a wildflower hardiness and can be sown directly outside after the frost. For earliest blooms, begin seeds indoors 8-10 weeks prior. Germination will take 1-3 weeks in full lighting. Harden off Heliopsis seedlings in a warm sunny spot in the garden or keep them indoors with good drainage and full sun. Summer Sun heliopsis is known to thrive in poor and sandy soils. Growth is vigorous, yet can be unpredictable, with a 36-72 inch difference between the tallest and shortest of mature plants. Plan your garden accordingly and plant all Summer Sun seeds at the north end of the garden.

Deadheading after flowering is recommended to encourage new flowers. Plants will benefit from fertilizer or compost being worked into the soil prior to planting out. For established plants, apply fertilizer or compost each early spring and once again in the middle of the growing season. Don’t apply fertilizer late in the season. Either cut back the foliage after the first hard frost in the fall or in the early spring before the new growth appears.

They are useful in the landscape as filler plants between other perennials. Plant them en masse on banks and slopes to prevent and control soil erosion.

These magnificent heliopsis blooms can also be used as cut flowers for arrangements. They add brightness and texture to any bouquet or centerpiece. To harvest as a cut flower, snip off the bloom as far down the stem as possible and then store it in cold water to prolong its life. Change out the water every day for indoor color lasting 1-2 weeks.

Expect bright blooms about 3-4 inches wide.

Heliopsis scabra, or sometimes referred to as Ox Eye, False Sunflower, or simply Heliopsis, is native to eastern and central North America including much of Newfoundland and Saskatchewan all the way down into Georgia and Texas. Plants in the genus Heliopsis are both similar in appearance and closely related to those in the genus Helianthus (true sunflower). Heliopsis scabra has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.

Heliopsis aren’t officially deer resistant, but they are very frequently left alone by deer unless they have a food shortage. It is also not known to be toxic to any mammal, including humans and house pets.
