55-65 days maturity after transplanting. Benincasa hispida var. chieh-qua ’Fong Show’. Fong Show Gourd Seeds. Non-GMO, warm-season, annual, hybrid. This jointed gourd, hairy melon, or mokwa variety is an early to medium maturing hybrid. The fruits are cylindrical, average 8-10 inches long, and 2-3 inches wide. The fruit has hairy, green skin and requires a long, warm growing season to fully mature. The flesh is firm, white, and has a mild flavor. The plants are vigorous and productive. Approx 700 seeds / oz.
To prep the gourd seeds, they should be soaked for 24 hours and germinated on a moist towel in a dark container. If you live in growing zones five or six, start the seeds inside and transplant them outside after the last frost and a hardening-off time. If you live in growing zones seven or higher, germinate the seeds indoors and then direct sow (in situ).
Hill planting: Form soil into a one-foot diameter pile three to four inches tall. Space the mounds four to six feet apart. Plant two seeds on each heap. Row planting: Note spacing info above. Hand pollination encourages maximum fruit yield. Fong Show gourds should be planted next to an obelisk or trellis; vertical growth delivers air circulation, reducing diseases and promoting attractive fruits. Supply deep and infrequent water and avoid moisture on the leaves. Fertilize in mid-season when the flowers start to come on, and fruiting structures begin to develop.
Harvesting Fong Show Gourd
Harvest when they are about 8-10 inches long and 2-3 inches wide. Fong Show gourds store for a long time as their waxy skin retains moisture well. Store in a cool, dry place.
Use Fong Show gourd as a substitute for zucchini. To retain the best flavor, be careful to not overcook the flesh. Cut into chunks for steaming, stir-frying, soups, baking, or braising.
Tips From Our Gardeners
“I recommend wearing gloves when handling the raw Fong Show gourds. On the outside of the fruit, there are tiny hairs that can cause skin irritation for some.”
