How to Grow Buab Khom Gourd
Increase the germination rate by soaking the seeds for 24 hours in warm water; then, place them in a sealed, dark container with a wet paper towel. In northern climates, this plant should be cultivated in a heated greenhouse. In conditions where greenhouse cucumbers can be grown, these gourds prefer it even a tad warmer! Luffa Gourds do not like being transplanted; plant the seedlings in their growing site quickly.
Buab Khom Luffa Gourd loves a structure to climb up. It provides air circulation to avoid diseases and create uniform fruits. Luffa thrives next to legume plant varieties. Cut back the branches occasionally to have one vertical vine. In conditions with a long enough growing season, remove the first few blooms and allow the plant additional time to establish before fruiting.
Harvesting Buab Khom Gourd
For eating, harvest the gourds when they are firm, bright green, and 4-6 inches long. For a shower luffa harvest, leave the gourds on the plant until they are brown and dry. Remove the skin and seeds for luffa use.
Culinary Tips
The young edible gourds do not store well. Pick them close to when you use them. Buab Khom gourds are eaten like other gourds; lightly stir-fry thin slices or add to soup, steam, or deep-fry thick slices.
Tips From Our Gardeners
“I have learned that it is best to let the mature, yellow gourds dry for a few more days indoors once they have been cut off from the plant. This ensures the fibers inside have developed and properly dried.”
