Growing Non-GMO Gaillardia Arizona Series Flower Seeds
Arizona Series gaillardia has wildflower-like hardiness and is most commonly broadcasted directly after the frost but, for earliest blooms, begin seeds 8-10 weeks indoors prior. Gaillardia seeds are known to require 14-35 days to germinate in full lighting but, once established, plants are one of the hardiest wildflowers available and may even reseed in optimal growing conditions. Plant 3-4 Arizona Series gaillardia seeds ¼ inch deep or broadcast directly in moist, rich in organic matter, and good draining soil in full sun. Arizona Series performs well in hot, dry, sandy, and poorly tended gardens, but will show signs of root rot, and powdery mildew if the soil is soggy or wet.
Deadeading after flowering is not required which makes this plant so easy to maintain! This is one of the few plants that can actually thrive under neglect. More attention than necessary can cause negative effects. It is possible to toss some seeds onto a dry hillside where little else grows and be rewarded by perennial color. No fertilization is needed.
Gaillardia Arizona Series in the Flower Garden
This Arizona Series of Gaillardias is an attractor for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators; they will help your garden to have good circulation to grow all your fruits and vegetables! They fit into wildflower, pollinator, ornamental, and cottage garden styles.
Landscape Use of Gaillardia Arizona Series
They make an excellent choice for pots, fields, and garden borders. They are dramatic enough to be a focal point but can also blend into a wider landscape. These are especially fantastic for low or no-maintenance perennial gardens or landscapes. The cherry on top is that they are known to be deer resistant!
About Gaillardia Arizona Series Garden Seeds
These colorful Gaillardias can also be used as cut flowers for cottagey arrangements. They add vibrant colors and a fluffy texture to any bouquet or centerpiece. To harvest as a cut flower, snip off the bloom as far down the stem as possible and then store in cold water to prolong its vitality.
Arizona Series gaillardia debuted as a 2005 All-America Selections Flower Winner and 2005 Fleuroselect Bedding Plant Winner for continuous blooming throughout the season.
Gaillardias got their scientific name from the patron saint for botanists, Gaillard de Charentonneau. He was a French magistrate who is lovingly remembered through this flower.
Gaillardia aristata, more commonly known as Blanket Flower or Gaillardia, is a sun-hardy wildflower perennial native to North America from the Yukons and Quebec down into the American southwest but has since naturalized throughout many similar climates across the world.
Although it is not necessary for most growing zones, starting these indoors will ensure the earliest spring blooms. After 2-3 weeks, transplant them outside after hardening off.
Gaillardias can also be grown as an annual for gardeners who like to change things up every year. It is recommended to start the seeds indoors to ensure they have enough time to bloom.
Stories From Our Gardeners
"I always recommend these flowers for older folk’s home landscapes. They don’t require maintenance, won’t be munched on by deer, and flower beautifully!"
