90-100 Days to maturity. Lathyrus odoratus. Sweet Pea Bijou Mix Seeds. Non-GMO, annual, open-pollinated. Sweet Pea Bijou Mix Dwarf is a short bushy selection of sweet peas with fragrant flowers. This adorably compact sweet pea vine is perfect for small outdoor spaces and is adorned with fragrant, multi-colored blooms. Open-pollinated and easy to care for, Bijou sweet peas will bring a bright and cheerful light to any space. The easy-going Bijou mix doesn’t need to germinate indoors. Just sow and go! ~280 seeds/oz.
Soaking the seeds overnight in water can boost germination times. Sow these seeds directly into the soil and they will be growing all summer long. The best time to plant for most climates is early in the spring, as soon as the ground is workable; this may mean late winter for some growing zones. It is crucial to get these seeds out as early as possible. Don’t wait for the last frost to pass. Loosen up the soil before planting and optionally add in compost to ensure maximum soil fertility and organic matter content.
This dwarf variety doesn’t require it, but a trellis or similar structure can be inserted nearby to give height, air circulation, and definition during growth. Quickly remove any dead or spent blooms; this will encourage more flowering throughout the summer. In growing zones above 8, you can also plant these in the fall for winter blooms. Add mature compost or fertilizer a few times throughout the season.
Sweet Pea Bijou Mix in the Flower Garden
This Bijou Mix of Sweet Peas is deer and rabbit-resistant. Yet, bees and butterflies love them; they will bring much-needed pollination into your garden. Use this unique plant to obtain color where other flowering annuals might fall short.
Landscape Use of Sweet Pea Bijou Mix
They make an excellent choice for hanging baskets, pots, and garden borders. Dwarf varieties are a great choice for those that love sweet peas but are short on space. With a trellis, these can be a centerpiece to a smaller flower bed. Or, allow these to sprawl and plant them close together for a new take on a flowering ground cover.
About Sweet Pea Bijou Mix Garden Seeds
Although the name may indicate an edible flower, we do not recommend consuming any part of this plant. Bijou Mix Sweet Pea flowers are not edible.
These dwarf sweet peas can also be used as cut flowers for short-stemmed arrangements. They add bright colors and a wonderful aroma to any bouquet or centerpiece. To harvest as a cut flower, simply snip off the bloom where it branches off from the main stem. Keep in cold water to prolong its vitality.
Expect blooms about 1-2 inches wide and tall.
Sweet peas generally originate from the Mediterranean, specifically Sicily in southern Italy and the Aegean Islands. This specially selected dwarf variety is much shorter in length than traditional sweet peas.
Sweet peas require temperatures below 60°F to initiate blooming. Once they have bloomed, they have a higher temperature tolerance.
Although it is not necessary for most growing zones start indoors for early spring blooms. After 2-3 weeks, transplant them outside after hardening off.

When growing sweet peas in hot, dry climates or greenhouses, spider mites can be a battle. Lightly spray the foliage with water 3-4 times per week. Allow enough time for the foliage to dry between sprays. Sweet peas have very few other predators or diseases. They are not usually targeted by deer.
