Growing Non-GMO Dahlia Figaro Series Flower Seeds
Plant 2-3 Figaro Series dahlia seeds 0.125 inches deep into fertile, medium moist, and well-drained soil in partial sun. Germination is best at 75°F and will take 2-3 weeks. These seeds can be directly sown in warmer climates (zones 8-11) or started indoors for earlier blooms and in cooler areas. Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost. Harden off the seedlings if they were started indoors and transplant them outdoors according to the spacing guidelines provided. Water 2-3 times per week, but avoid standing water near roots. Figaro Series dahlia is adaptable and known to be tolerant of drought, heat, and poor soils.
They can survive the winter down to zone 7-8 with root protection. Conversely, they can be grown as beautiful annuals in zones 6-7 and below. Many gardeners have had success with overwintering dahlia plants in pots. Once the above-ground portion of the plant has died, cut it back, and store the container in a cool, dry place. This can also be done by carefully digging up the roots for indoor storage. Return the roots or pots outdoors when temperatures are consistently above 65 F in the springtime. Provide shade in hot, dry climates and when seedlings are young.
Dahlia Figaro Series in the Flower Garden
Dahlias are most commonly the central focus of any flower garden. Their blooms make darling bouquets but when left outside will readily shine in a bed, along a border, or in a mixed planting.
Landscape Use of Dahlia Figaro Series
Figaro Series Dahlias are known to be deer resistant in most cases. With proper winter protection and a little bit of yearly maintenance, these flowers can be a staple addition to any landscape. They should be included in any Latin or Mexican-themed garden design.
About Dahlia Figaro Series Garden Seeds
These magnificent Dahlias can also be used as cut flowers for breathtaking arrangements. They add bright colors and unique shapes to any bouquet or centerpiece. To harvest as a cut flower, trim off the bloom as far down the stem as possible and store it in cold water. Change out the water every day for indoor color persisting for 1-2 weeks.
Expect kaleidoscopic blooms about 3 inches wide and tall.
Dahlias got their name from the famous Swedish botanist Anders Dahl; although there was much debate on the subject back in the day since dahlias are not native to Sweden.
Dahlia pinnata, or more commonly known as dahlia, is native to the dry and arid regions of Mexico and Central America and is the official flower of Mexico. Dahlia pinnata is known to have been an ornamental flower cultivated by the Aztecs before the arrival of the Europeans.
Dahlias are toxic when ingested by pets and should be kept away from cats, dogs, and other animal friends.
