55-60 Days to maturity. Cucumis sativus var. zipangu. Zipangu Cucumber Hybrid Seeds. Warm Season Annual Hybrid. A delicious and versatile cucumber variety that deserves more attention than it gets! Zipangu is a Sooyow-type hybrid cucumber. The vibrant green fruit is characteristically uniform and irresistibly crisp with a wonderfully fresh flavor. Fruits are dark green with lots of spines and ridges growing 8-9" long and weighing 3-3.5 ounces. It is the ideal cucumber choice for both pickling and fresh use. Approximately 1,100 seeds per oz.
Sow seeds in the late spring or early summer after the last frost in a warm, sunny location. Optionally, start seeds indoors 2-3 weeks before the last frost and transplant when the weather warms. Keep the soil moist. Fertilize as needed. We recommend training it to climb a vertical support for better air circulation, straighter fruits, and an easy harvest. Avoid standing water near roots.
Harvesting Zipangu Cucumber
Harvest when the fruit is 6-12 inches long, dark green, and firm. Gently snip off the fruit at the base of the stem.
Enjoy traditional dishes like kyuri sunomono or tsukemono (pickled). The flesh is very crisp, firm, and mostly eaten fresh. These can be used in any way that you use traditional cucumbers, but they will add an extra crunch.
